Private network: A private network location type can be for home or small office networks, or when you know and trust the people and devices on the network. This setting allows your PC to connect to a homegroup and devices on the network, such as printers. I suggest you to change the network type on your computer to private and check if it helps. September 5, 2019 Dear HP Forum I need to get a working WIFI wireless driver for my HP ah117wm notebook. I installed Windows 10 - 64 bit. But there is NO wifi driver shown in the Device Manager (Network Adapters) section. Any help is appreciated. Email me at edit. A data plan and Wi-Fi network basically let you do the same thing: use the Internet wirelessly. Some devices are built for Wi-Fi use only while others, such as 4G LTE smartphones and the Samsung Galaxy Tab S6, have Wi-Fi, 3G and 4G LTE access. Depending on how much you use the Internet and where, a data-enabled device gives you the best of both. Android’s built-in data-usage monitor may allow you to monitor your Wi-Fi data usage, but not for a specific network — just all Wi-FI data. IPhones and iPads only allow you to monitor cellular data usage. You’ll need third-party apps for these devices to keep track of how much data you’re using on Wi-Fi. Actual data throughput and WiFi coverage will vary from network conditions and environmental factors, including the volume of network traffic, building material and construction, and network overhead, result in lower actual data throughput and wireless coverage. Quoted network speeds and bandwidth based on current IEEE 802.11ac specifications.

A communications device is any type of hardware capable of transmitting data, instructions, and information between a sending device and a receiving device. One type of communicationsdevice that connects a communications channel to a sending or receiving device such as a com-puter is a modem. Computers process data as digital signals. Data, instructions, and informationtravel along a communications channel in either analog or digital form, depending on the com-munications channel. An analog signal consists of a continuous electrical wave. A digital signalconsists of individual electrical pulses that represent bits grouped together into bytes.
For communications channels that use digital signals (such as cable television lines), the modemtransfers the digital signals between the computer and the communications channel. If a communications channel uses analog signals (such as some telephone lines), however, themodem first converts between analog and digital signals.
The following pages describe the following types of communications devices: dial-up modems, ISDNand DSL modems, cable modems, wireless modems, network cards, wireless access points, and routers.
Dial-Up ModemsAs previously discussed, a computer’s digital signals must be converted to analog signals beforethey are transmitted over standard telephone lines. The communications device that performs thisconversion is a modem, sometimes called a dial-up modem. The word, modem, is derived from thecombination of the words, modulate, to change into an analog signal, and demodulate, to convert ananalog signal into a digital signal.
A modem usually is in the form of an adapter card that you insert in an expansion slot on a com-puter’s motherboard. One end of a standard telephone cord attaches to a port on the modem cardand the other end plugs into a telephone outlet.
ISDN and DSL Modems
If you access the Internet using ISDN or DSL, you need a communications device to send andreceive the digital ISDN or DSL signals. An ISDN modem sends digital data and information froma computer to an ISDN line and receives digital data and information from an ISDN line. A DSLmodem sends digital data and information from a computer to a DSL line and receives digital dataand information from a DSL line. ISDN and DSL modems usually are external devices, in whichone end connects to the telephone line and the other end connects to a port on the system unit.
Cable Modems
A cable modem is a digital modem that sends and receives digital data over the cable television(CATV) network (Figure 8-18). With more than 110 million homes wired for cable television, cablemodems provide a faster Internet access alternative to dial-up for the home user and have speedssimilar to DSL. Cable modems currently can transmit data at speeds that are much faster thaneither a dial-up modem or ISDN.
Wireless ModemsSome mobile users have awireless modem that uses the cell phone network to connect to the Internet wirelessly from a notebook computer, a smartphone, or other mobile device(Figure 8-19). Wireless modems, which have an external or built-inantenna, are available as PC Cards,ExpressCard modules, and flashcards.
Network Cards
A network card is an adapter card, PC Card, ExpressCard module, USB network adapter, orflash card that enables a computer or device that does not have networking capability to access anetwork. The network card coordinates the transmission and receipt of data, instructions, andinformation to and from the computer or device containing the network card.
Network cards are available in a variety of styles (Figure 8-20). A network card for a desktopcomputer is an adapter card that has a port to which a cable connects. A network card for mobilecomputers and devices is in the form of a PC Card, ExpressCard module, USB network adapter,or a flash card. Network cards that provide wireless data transmission also are available. Thistype of card, sometimes called a wireless network card, often has an antenna.
A network card follows the guidelines of a particular network communications standard, suchas Ethernet or token ring. An Ethernet card is the most common type of network card.
Wireless Access Points
A wireless access point is a centralcommunications device that allows com-puters and devices to transfer data wirelesslyamong themselves or to transfer data wire-lessly to a wired network (Figure 8-7 on page303). Wireless access points have high-qualityantennas for optimal signals.

Routers
A router is a communications device thatconnects multiple computers or other routerstogether and transmits data to its correct desti-nation on the network. A router can be usedon any size of network. On the largest scale, routers along the Internet backbone forwarddata packets to their destination using thefastest available path. For smaller businessand home networks, a router allows multiplecomputers to share a single high-speedInternet connection such as a cable modem or DSL modem (Figure 8-21). These routersconnect from 2 to 250 computers.
To prevent unauthorized users from accessing files and computers, many routers are protected bya built-in firewall, called a hardware firewall. Some also have built-in antivirus protection. Today’srouters or combination wireless access point/routers are easy to configure and secure againstunauthorized access.
1. How does your service work?
Our service operates over a satellite, or a very small aperture terminal (VSAT) connection. Once your ship is in international waters, the WMS network turns on and you will automatically connect to it. Please note that cruise ship roaming rates will apply. Our service will be available while sailing in international waters. Once your ship approaches land again, our service is turned off and the mobile device will pick up local service. If you pick up local service in the port areas, you may be charged a different rate by your carrier than the Cruise Ship Roaming rate. Contact your carrier for pricing and details.
2. How do I connect my mobile device to the WMS network onboard my ship?
Compatible roaming enabled devices with a carrier that has a roaming agreement with WMS will automatically connect to the WMS network for normal operating cellular service when the WMS network turns on, with no additional effort from the mobile user. Dependent on the mobile device, you will know that you are on the WMS network when you see one of the following networks displayed on your mobile device: “cellularatsea”, “wmsatsea”, “NOR-18” or “901-18”. If you are at sea and do not have network connectivity, 1) ensure roaming is enabled on your mobile from the network settings on your mobile device, 2)power cycle your mobile device, 3) perform a manual search for the WMS network from the network settings on your mobile device, or 4) contact your service provider to confirm you have international roaming enabled on you service plan and mobile.
3. How do I dial out?
Simply dial “1” plus the area code and number to call anywhere in North America.
Dial “+” along with the country code and number to call non-US destinations. Dialing the + differs per phone model (hold 0 key or find symbol key on smartphones).
*Verizon Wireless/Sprint users dial “011” country code and number to non-US destinations.
4. How much will it cost to use my cellular mobile device onboard a ship?
Rates are set and determined solely by your cell phone carrier—WMS has no involvement in the retail rates your carrier charges for cruise ship roaming or the billing process. For precise rates you will pay onboard, please contact your carrier directly to confirm their Cruise Ship Roaming Rates for voice calls, texting, and/or data.
5. How will my cell phone carrier bill for services used onboard a cruise ship?
All billing is handled by your cell phone carrier and you will be billed for any charges incurred while onboard a ship on your next monthly cell phone bill directly from your carrier. There are no additional charges or billing from WMS or the cruise lines.
6. If my mobile device is left on and I do not use it, will I be charged?
In some cases, a mobile device that is left on, but not used, may incur charges. If a voice call is received but not answered, and the caller leaves a voicemail, you may receive a charge for a voice call. If a text message comes through and the mobile device is left on, you may be charged for a received text message. Please note that smartphones (iOS, Android and other wireless devices) are constantly looking for data connections to perform updates and other synchronization steps. Therefore, it is highly possible that if you leave your wireless device on, you will incur data charges. Please contact your carrier for more information on data charges.
7. I did not use my mobile device onboard a cruise ship and I received charges, how do I dispute charges or get a refund?
Any questions or issues regarding billing must be handled solely through your carrier. WMS has no involvement at all with retail charges applied to the monthly bill by the cell phone provider. The cell phone carrier is the only entity with the ability to make any necessary adjustments to a customer’s bill.
8. Are there any cruise ship packages for voice minutes or data available to use this service?
WMS does not offer any cruise ship packages for passengers. Please contact your wireless carrier for details on pricing.
AT&T offers cruise ship world packages. Please contact AT&T for details on rates and coverage.
Verizon offers cruise ship pricing for customers. Please contact Verizon for additional information.
Sprint offers cruise ship pricing as well. Please contact Sprint for more information.
9. Will my unlimited rate plan apply to your service?
Please contact your carrier to confirm this and your specific pricing details.
